1. WONDERING, EXPLORING AND QUESTIONING

What is universal design? Why do we need to explore universal design? Why do universal design is very important to know and good as a topic for exhibition? How to connect our learning activity with our action? What are our responsibility as citizen or small community to sustain the program? Is the government has concern about it? Did Jakarta government implement universal design in public area?

Based on the basic questions above, we  try to explore some aspects such as start to find an article related with universal design, make question that we still wondering. We make agreement as our role.
Back ground problem pictures:

2. RESEARCHING AND SEEKING INFORMATION

We start to think to find our primary resource(s). Where do we want to go? Who is our source? When will we go? How to go there? What do we want to ask? After we get the knowledge, what should we do?

On Wednesday 14 Feb 2018, we were visiting Central Park at S.Parman street west Jakarta. We interviewed Ibu Christie Damayanti.  She is an architect that design Central Park with universal design concept. Based on her survey that Central Park is mall that implement universal design. She also design some mall around Jakarta such as Senayan City, Citraland mall and many houses that she mention.

Facts that we got from our primary source are:
1. Any information regarding of architect  we can open neufert, which is the author of book. And also the best information from all that we can get
2. Pedestrian must 2m space on right and 2m for left side.
3. The main road/ protocol must provide 4m for each side. Total wide for main road is 8m.
4. In universal design there is NO stairs. The land must 5 degree of slope. It is very helpful for people with wheelchair.
5. International color for universal design in public area is yellow. Why? because yellow is acceptable for people with low vision.
6. For  blind people, the symbol are from the shape of land. if circle means in the middle of road. if straight/rectangle means keep walk straight.
7. In this world only 2 places that implement universal design from the beginning. There are Washington DC and Canberra.

The field trip was fun and the most important was we get new information regarding of Universal design.
We record all the things into reflection. Safia made movie, Ravin and Nazzel made mid map, Luca made story board and Zeva made narrative writing.

3. Experimenting and playing with possibilities

Second field trip we went to Departemen Pekerjaan Umum located in Jalan Patimura no 40. We met Mr.Andhika as our primary resource. From him we got a lot of information related with Jakarta development, universal design from PU perspective and location that we can visit that implement universal design.

Here are the recap of some information from our field trip:
1. The areas that P.U. concern are roads, bridges, state buildings, reservoirs, drainage, green open spaces
2. The obstacles that PU facing are land and technical development
3. The budget come from government
4. The development authority for the sidewalk road is in the regional authority. Which is Jakarta province
5. The legal basis used is the minister's regulation. PP PU no:14/2017
6. If government want to build friendly pedestrian, must provide chair and tree
7. There are 17 development goals in PU but only 3 major goals that PU implement it because related with equality. There are: no.5 about the gender equality, no.10 about reduce equality and no.11 about susceptibilities and communities
8. Principle of universal design in PU: space equity, safety and security, easy access without barriers, ease of information access, independence of space usage, user efficiency, suitability of hergonomic size
9. Jakarta has plan until 2030 that reduce pollution 30 percent, reduce energy(water and electricity) 30 percent. That called 30/30
10. PU always work together with regional government (pemda DKI)

At the same day, we also went to around Kebayoran Baru. We distribute questioner to Jakarta citizen. We distributes 70 questioners. And we distributed around our school (Al Jabr) 30 questioners. Total 100 questioners. Thank you to all respondents.

4. making connection between previous and current learning

After we got many information, we count all the questioners. Counting all questioners is not easy. Needs patience, commitment and cooperation. We display in pie chart and bar graphs that we draw  by ourselves.

To know Jakarta citizen's opinions we made 6 questions to represent each topic. They are :
Knowledge of universal design. An understanding of the symbols on the sidewalk. Implementation of regulations and sanctions for road users / sidewalks. Public understanding of the use of sidewalks. Public awareness of the use of sidewalks. Satisfaction of society to infrastructure / sidewalk in South Jakarta.

5. reappraising perception

Many things to know that the sidewalk is the right of all the people who pass there, especially for pedestrians.

Jakarta is growing city. Many people said that Jakarta has a lot of homework. From the houses, pedestrian, law, schools and many things. Every years government make policy to make better Jakarta in every sector area. Since we are focusing on universal design so pedestrian is the focus.

2018 Jakarta has new governor, from the previous governor already ha change in some sectors. Now time to continue the good thugs to make it better. Public areas the focus for Indonesian society.

In Pancasila at section 5 says social justice for all Indonesians (
keadilan sosial bagi seluruh masyarakat Indonesia), become the basic law/role to build and create everything in public area. Guidance block is one of the sample. Green space, clean Jakarta, friendly people and environment.

To make Jakarta equal with other big city in the world, we as the citizen has to support all the program from governor. Pedestrian has law and able to access for all. Including disabled people.

6. solving problems in a variety of ways

In this stage we are looking for various alternatives for action. Both in terms of activities and places we will visit. Especially we are required to design action that can last long and useful for the community that we visit. The sustainability.

After long discussion finally we decided to visit MTSN 19 Jakarta. In that school also have disable students. At te first time the school not decided  for disabled students, for 4years lately as public school finally MTsN enroll for disabled students. At MTsN 19 provided for blind, 1 of the student whose body growth is not normal and other disabled.

We did survey and communicate with MTsN19 principle. We talked about our journey of exhibition and about action plan. Alhamdulillah, the principle agreed with our plan. And also can sustain for next time. These are the plan:
1. Fix the ubin taktil (guiding blocks). It is very related with universal design
2. Create some symbols that support universal design activity in MTsN 19 daily life. The designs are made by students. One of the signage (shcool signage)was design by Nazzel. Also got some feed back from MTsN19 principle. Alhamdulillah done and based on criteria.
3. Create petition same like suggestion for AL Jabr community. It is also related with our topic that can be used for our school
Hopefully can be implemented well and sustain for all.

At last, we make action reflection with six thinking hats. One student represent one hat. And for overall activity we closed in unit reflection.
