What have we already known?
During our first meeting with our mentors, we discussed about what have we known about lost of food chain within ecosystem. Acknowledging there were many lost of food chain that we have read from the article, we decided to choose the topic of Shark Extinction. In this case, we learned about underwater food chain and how shark was important within it . Then, we found out that shark was started to extinct due to few causes. https://www.worldwildlife.org/species/shark

Dalam Al Quran Surat Al A’raf [7], ayat 56, Allah SWT berfirman :
Artinya :
And do not corrupt on earth after its reformation, and pray to Him with fear and hope. God’s mercy is close to the doers of good.

Collecting Data #1 - Field Trip to LIPI
Our first field trip Feb 12th 2020 was visiting Pusat Penelitian Oceanografi LIPI, Ancol to learn more about shark and global warming.
First, we learned about sharks; the biology, types of sharks, characteristics, and the cause and effects of sharks extinction. |
The speaker was Ibu Selvia, M.Si. She explained that there were rules for fishing the shark. The regulation was made for arranging which shark were not allowed to catch.
We also learned about the illegal fishing that was happening in Indonesia, Shark Finning. We found that one of the causes that sharks were extinct was because they have been illegally caught by the fisherman, which then sold as a shark fin soup. In this case, the government made some regulation related to shark fining. Moreover, LIPI has also contributed to the sustainability of sharks in Indonesia. We also learned a few things that we could do to help the shark populations by not eating shark fin soup and supporting the government's program. The second speaker talked about global warming and its impact on shark habitation. The speaker was Ibu Intan, Ph.D. She stated that the effects of global warming were climate change, greenhouse gas, and sea-level rise. From the information we have got, we decided to dig deeper how global warming impacted to sharks and their food chain. |

Collecting Data #2-field trip to BuskiPM
On Thursday February 20th 2020, we visited Balai Uji Karantina Ikan, Pengendalian Mutu Dan Keamanan Hasil Perikanan (BUSKIPM) Jakarta. During the visit, we learnt types of sharks that have been protected from being extincted. We were shown a tool that could tests fish's DNA to find out whether the sharks that have been marketed was extincted or not. In this case, government could take action about the illegal fishing that had been happening in Indonesia.
We also visited the laboratory in BUSKIPM. The laboratory shows which fish that are ready and not ready to be sold in the market. Other than that, we also learnt about the illness within the fish through microscope.

STEP 4
ORGANIZING THE LEARNING After we interviewed the experts about this topic, we arranged the results. The data shows that there are so many type sharks in the ocean from the small size up to the big ones. The sustainability of the food chain cannot be separated from producers in the ocean. How about the global warming? We learn that the global warming has domino effect, we called it Sea Level Rise. |
In that case, the sea level rise could damage or destroy many coastal ecosystem and it may limit the habitats of sharks and their prey. This may limit the availability of the aforementioned habitats to sharks and their prey. Therefore, we plan to do experiment about sea level rise impacts to the sea habitats.

Sea Level Rise Experiment Which is Caused by Global Warming
Result of the Experiment
The purpose of this experiment is to see whether global warming has impacts on sea level rise, and how it is related to shark extinction. After conducting the experiment, students found out that global warming causes sea level rise which then encouraged the shark to migrate and find new habitats.
STEP 5
MONITORING THE EXHIBITION
MONITORING THE EXHIBITION
We made video conferences to monitor our exhibition progress. Each of us reported our own tasks. We also practiced to present our project. We discussed how we had to do it correctly.
STEP 6
SHARING THE EXHIBITION 1. Workshop
Gaining knowledge about the importance of the underwater food chain, we have planned two actions. The first action was we would like to conduct a workshop for educating the Al Jabr community to have awareness about the extinction of sharks. We would like to ask them to reflect on their daily activities.

2. Online Action
We made an Instagram group and a petition on Change.org
