The Inquiry Cycle

Tuning In

At the beginning of this process, the students were discussing and sharing prior knowledge towards their topic which is about mountain ecosystem. Especially the connection of how human interaction with the environment can affect the balance of the systems. They collected prior knowledge by reading articles, newspapers, making mind maps and described what they knew and saw from the picture they selected (Talk to the Picture). Every meeting, mentors checked as well gave feedback about their progress.

Finding Out

Excursion to Taman Nasional Gunung Gede Pangrango

To find out more about the topic, we went to the nearest mountain from Jakarta. We come up with Taman Nasional Gunung Gede Pangrango (Mount Gede Pangrango National Park). It is located in Jalan Raya Cibodas, Cipanas, West Java. The park is centred on two volcanoes, Mount Gede and Mount Pangrango. It is actually one of conservation areas for various biodiversity.
We collected information about the place by interviewing the peoples who manage the conservation area and also exploring and observing the mountain environment itself, although only at the foot of the mountain. This has been the students first experience visiting the mountain ecosystem so it was a bit challenging for them.

The questions we prepared for the interview

Excursion to Kementrian Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan

We choose Kementrian Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan (Ministry of Environment and Forestry) as our second primary resources because they responsible for managing and conserving the nation's forest and all the environment relate to it. Not the mention biodiversity in the mountain ecosystem.
We went there along with the Rain Forest ecosystem group. Our group decided to focus on the conservation of flora and fauna in the mountain ecosystem and raised a topic about wild animal hunting and illegal plants picking. We collected information by interviewing, observing and asking questions related to the issues. From here, we were hoping to have ideas and other sources for our next action.

Sorting Out

We sort out our findings by reviewing the information into several main ideas that connected and supported our raised topic. This was our documentation and recording result during excursion and research process.

Important Fauna

Mount Gede Pangrango is inhabited by lots of endangered animals species such as the Javan hawk-eagle (Elang Jawa), Javan lutung (Owa Jawa), Javan leopard (Macan tutul Jawa) and others.

Important Flora

The flora also various with many kinds of flowers, ferns, mushrooms and orchids. The famous flower among the climbers is Javan edelweis (Edelweis Jawa).

Going Further

We did fundraising to collect some money needed for our action. We decided to use the money for the conservation of endangered flora and fauna in the mountain. We did some research and communication to several non governmental organization that manage the conservation of wild animals in Indonesia. There are Yayasan Gibbon Indonesia, Yayasan Owa Jawa (Javan Gibbon Center) and Suaka Elang Jawa. We selected these organization because of the location near Jakarta.

Making Conclusion

From our research through that non governmental organization website and phone communication, we regret that we would not be able to do our action in that places. There were factors such as the conservation area is outside Java, the conservation itself forbid human interaction due to health problem and safety issues. But, that will not stopped us making our action happening. We were actually inspired by that non governmental organization then we came up with the ideas to raise an education about human responsibilities towards the flora and fauna in the mountain ecosystem. So, we planning to do this activities:
1. Story telling about wild animals or endangered animals
2. Educate people how to conserve the wild animals and plants in the mountain
3. Making signage in the mountain area to inform the visitors
