INSECTS AS NATURAL PREDATOR

Biodiversity relies on maintaining the interdependent balance of organisms within systems.

The Lines of Inquiry:
  • Ways in which ecosystems, bio-mes and  environments are interdependent
  • How human interaction with the environment can affect the balance of systems
  • The consequences of imbalance within ecosystems

Science strands: Living things
The study of the characteristics, systems and behaviors of humans and other animals, and of plants; the interactions and relationships between and among them, and with their environment.

Related concepts:
adaptation, animals, biodiversity, biology, classification, conservation, ecosystems, evolution, genetics, growth, habitat, homeostasis, organism, plants.

Exploring, wondering and questioning

catching insects

Picture
We went out and finding insects int he school garden. We catch some of them as a sample to collect further data. Our mentor guided us with some questions to find out such as what is the name, the habitat, the food chain and its benefit for the ecosystem.

interviewing gardener

Picture
We interviewed the school gardener about how many and what kind of insects that are found in the school garden. We found out that they were using the pesticide to kills the insects. Does most people think the same way, that insects has no benefit and should be killed? What do you think?

HOW MUCH DOES THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY KNOWS ABOUT INSECTS?

We conduct survey to ask the school community of how much they know about insects. here are some questions from our survey :

1. Do insects scare you?
    Apakah serangga menakutkan bagi Anda?
2. Do you think insects is harmfull?
    Apakah menurut Anda serangga merugikan?
3. Do you know that insects have benefits for the ecosystem?
Apakah Anda tahu serangga memiliki manfaat untuk ekosistem?
4. Would you rather kill insects when you see them?
Apakah Anda akan membunuh serangga jika melihatnya?
5. Do you want/need more info about insects?
Apakah Anda mau/perlu informasi lebih lanjur mengenai serangga?

A VISIT TO IPB

Using primary resources to gather data by visiting IPB and looking at the collection of insects they have.

plant identification

The school garden has been our resources to observe and collect data. We went to identify which plant are considered as crops and which are not. We also ask the gardener to explain what are the differences between those plants. Our school has produced many vegetables that is also being sold to the school community.

EXPERIMENTING AND PLAYING POSSIBILITIES

Picture
Based on our reserach that there are some plants that has big chance to attract insects that will bring natural preadtor insects. One of them is the sun flower plant. So conduct experiment by providing sun flower and observing it daily on what kind and how many of insects that came. We record the obervation by photos and daily chart in our journal.
However, the sunflower has not grown any flowers yet, so it was just the plant with leaf. Experiment perhaps did not run as we expected due to that condition, but we still write evey possibilities that we see during the experiment period.
