IDENTIFY GLOBALLY SIGNIFICANT ISSUES

EXPLORING, WONDERING, AND QUESTIONING
Let's educate ourselves about climate change!
Climate change is a serious problem that everyone has to know, even kids need to know about it too.
Climate change has been a big issue in the 21st century. Every country has been experiencing the effect of it. We are interested in exploring more about climate change because it has damaged a lot of sectors such as health, agriculture, animal extinction, and many more.

We can't act like we don't care because it will influence our lives in the future. We have to do things to reduce the bad impacts that might happen in the future.

Picture
To start our project, we identify the problems around us as impacts of rapid climate change from the internet, and newspaper.
Picture
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says average surface temperatures on Earth rose 1.71 degrees Fahrenheit (0.95 degrees Celsius) between 1880 and 2016, and that change is accelerating in recent years. In 2017, 159 nations ratified the Paris Agreement to try to halt the warming at 2.7 degrees F (1.5 degrees C) above Earth's average temperature before the Industrial Age. Given industry's and transportation's reliance on fossil fuels, many studies say that agreement will be difficult to keep to.

For example, a 2017 study in the journal Geophysical Research Letters suggests that Earth's climate will be 1.5 degrees higher as early as 2026. This would happen if the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) fluctuates back to a warm period, instead of its current cool period. (IPO changes similarly to El Niño and La Niña in the Pacific).

In early 2018, the U.S. National Academies released a report called "Thriving on Our Changing Planet: A Decadal Strategy for Earth Observation from Space." The report focused on the importance of satellite observations in gaining information about Earth's climate in the coming years. Some of its suggestions include observatories that can help with forecasting air quality and weather, and others that can look at metrics such as biodiversity change, extreme weather and the ocean's ability to store heat.
Picture
We wonder:
1. What are the most dangerous impact that may happen in the future?
2. Is there any relation between climate change and recent disasters?
3. Is there any relation between climate change and human's behavior?
4. What has the government done to reduce the impacts of climate change?
5. What can people do to reduce the impacts of climate change?
6. Do people realize that some of their life styles effect climate change?

DETERMINING TIMING AND TIME FRAME

MAKING CONNECTIONS BETWEEN PREVIOUS LEARNING AND CURRENT LEARNING
Picture
This topic-about climate change-relates with our previous learning about environment, habitat of living things, natural disasters, and 3R (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle). Allah SWT has created this earth beautifully for living things to live. As stated in Al Quran Surah An-Nur verse 43: "Seest thou not that Allah makes the clouds move gently, then joins them together, then makes them into a heap? - then wilt thou see rain issue forth from their midst. And He sends down from the sky mountain masses (of clouds) wherein is hail: He strikes therewith whom He pleases and He turns it away from whom He pleases, the vivid flash of His lightning well-nigh blinds the sight."
Picture
In the other hand, people are not grateful by doing irresponsible things such as using fossil energy for their transportation that contribute CO2 to the atmosphere, using AC that releases CFC, and products that contribute to plastic waste which releases Methane. It causes a lot of natural disasters in the last decades. The damage of what irresponsible people have done also stated in Al Quran Surah Ar Ruum verse 41: "Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by (reason of) what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of (the consequence of) what they have done that perhaps they will return (to righteousness).

ENGAGING SUPPORT FROM
THE LEARNING COMMUNITY

COLLECTING DATA AND REPORTING FINDINGS OR RESEARCHING AND SEEKING INFORMATION
A FIELD-TRIP TO GREENPEACE
To dig deeper about climate change, we visited Greenpeace. Greenpeace is a non-profit organization that has been concerning in global warming issue. They fight some companies that have been the biggest contributor of plastic waste. We've got a lot of knowledge from our field-trip such as; we have to keep this earth temperature not more than 2 Celsius degrees.

A FIELD-TRIP TO KEMENTERIAN LINGKUNGAN HIDUP
Climate change issue has become familiar that many countries has been trying to reduce the bad impacts of it. We also want to know what our government has done to overcome this. So, we visited Kementerian Lingkungan Hidup.
Picture
Picture
From the resources we have visited, we knew that our government has been doing efforts to reduce the bad impacts of climate change. Indonesia work together with other countries and create Paris Agreement in 2015.
The Paris Agreement central aim is to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Additionally, the agreement aims to strengthen the ability of countries to deal with the impacts of climate change. To reach these ambitious goals, appropriate financial flows, a new technology framework and an enhanced capacity building framework will be put in place, thus supporting action by developing countries and the most vulnerable countries, in line with their own national objectives. The Agreement also provides for enhanced transparency of action and support through a more robust transparency framework.

ORGANIZING THE LEARNING

EXPERIMENTING AND PLAYING WITH POSSIBILITIES SOLVING PROBLEMS IN A VARIETY OF WAYS
GREENHOUSE EFFECT
We would like to know about the greenhouse effect that can cause climate change leading to global warming. So, we made an experiment. We provided two boxes. Each box contained of soil. One box was covered, the other one stayed uncovered. Then we put both in a sunny area. After a few minutes, the covered box temperature raised, but the temperature of other one slowly raised. The greenhouse effect is a process that occurs when gases in Earth's atmosphere trap the Sun's heat. This process makes Earth much warmer than it would be without an atmosphere. The greenhouse effect is one of the things that makes Earth a comfortable place to live.

Picture
Picture
Human activities are changing Earth's natural greenhouse effect. Burning fossil fuels like coal and oil puts more carbon dioxide into our atmosphere. NASA has observed increases in the amount of carbon dioxide and some other greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. Too much of these greenhouse gases can cause Earth's atmosphere to trap more and more heat. This causes Earth to warm up.
WATER ACIDITY EXPERIMENT
We conducted another experiment about the acidity of rainwater. Using two samples of water; rainwater and groundwater. The acidity of rainwater is higher than groundwater which is not good for our health.

Picture

MONITORING THE EXHIBITION

ESTABLISHING AND TESTING THEORIES
Picture
We would like to know about people's awareness of climate change by making questionnaire.
Picture
From our questionnaire, we conclude that actually people know about climate change.
Picture
People also know the impact of climate change
Picture
Even though people know about climate change, but most of them don't do anything to prevent climate change from getting worse. The use of private vehicles for going to places, and products with plastic packaging are still apprehensive. People are not really responsible with what they do. Their activities don't reflect on their knowledge about climate change.
Picture

SHARING THE EXHIBITION

TAKING AND DEPENDING A POSITION
From our experiment, questionnaire, and expert's data, we decide to do two actions. First, we educate the students in Al Jabr to be aware of the effect of climate change by changing their lifestyle; for example:
1. Reducing using products that may add plastic waste to the environment.
2. Turning off the electricity materials when it's not needed.
3. Instead of using AC, it's better to use a fan.
4. Use a bicycle or walk when we go to near places.
5. Don't stay in the rain too long because of the acidity of rainwater.
6. Drink enough water.
7. Eat foods contain of vitamins to make our immunity strong.

We also visited SDN 13 to educate them about how danger the climate change was. We shared our knowledge about how climate change could impact the acidity of rainwater which is not good for our health. Then we educated them about what made the acidity of rainwater increase. We suggested them to:
1. Turn off the electricity materials when it's not needed.
2. Bring their own drink bottle.
3. Drink enough water because of the global warming.
4. Eat healthy food to keep our immunity strong because uncertain weather-as the effect of global warming-can make our body sick easily.
