Central Idea

Biodiversity relies on maintaining the interdependent balance of organism within systems.
LINES OF INQUIRY
  • Ways in which ecosystems, biomes and environments are interdependent
  • How human interaction with the environment can affect the balance of systems
  • The consequences of imbalance within ecosystems

Inquiry Cycle

1. Exploring, wondering, and questioning
Picture

We started our project by making a mind map. We wrote everything we knew about Lutung Jawa;  such as, the characteristic, the habitat, the food and why Lutung jawa is almost extinct

2. Researching and seeking information
We tried to find out about the characteristics of Lutung Jawa:

  • Class : Mamal (identify from the ear leaf)
  • Ecology and habitat : diurnal (active during day time) and arboreal (living in trees)
  • Identification :There are two subspecies of the Javan langur (Trachypithecus auratus): the eastern Javan or spangled ebony langur (Trachypithecus auratus auratus) has two distinct colourations: the more common one being glossy black in color with a slight brownish tinge on the sides of the body, ‘sideburns’, and legs. The skin of the face, palms and soles is also black.
  • Size : The name ‘langur’ means ‘long tail’ in Hindi and this species’ tail is indeed noticeably long, measuring up to 87 centimetres in length while the body is only around 55 centimetres long

We also went to a field trip to Ragunan Zoo in order to get information about Lutung Jawa from the expert in Ragunan. We interviewed Ibu Maya as the expert who gave us a clear explanation about Lutung Jawa.
After the field trip, we made a reflection and summarize the information we got from the resource.
We also planned to invite another resource to school; Pro Fauna. Unfortunately, they could not come to school due to the time. However, we sent them an email about our question about Lutung Jawa. We got the answers and made a reflection by using 6 thinking hats method.
The Experiment

Based on information that Lutung Jawa helps spread seed in forest, we decided to do an experiment using two variables. First, we took the guava seeds and then spread the seeds in one place on a tray. Another one, we chew the guava and then spread it all over the tray. The result is the tray that covered by the seeds got big chance to grow plant.

The Action

After the students getting more exposures about the extinction of Lutung Jawa, we confidence enough to deliver the messages of preventing Lutung Jawa to the students outside of our community. By taking this action we hope that the more people know the better situation will be.
