Welcome to our group blog, we will share our investigation about:
Environmental recovery from natural disaster
Central idea: Government systems influence the lives of citizens
Concept – related concept : function, perspective, responsibility of equality, citizenship, governance, law and politics An inquiry into: • How government systems function • How decision-making practices reflect human rights • Impact of government on citizens • The rights and responsibilities of citizenship |

The Students
Mentors
Inquiry Cycle:
1. Tuning in
Environmental recovery from natural disaster At the beginning , the students were discussing and sharing prior knowledge towards their topic Environmental recovery from natural disaster. and For the Tuning In stage, we were provided with the following guiding questions: What do you know about natural disaster? what are you interested in? Flood what questions do you have about natural disaster/flood? where and how could you find information about flood? who could help you? They collected prior knowledge by reading articles, newspapers, making mind maps and described what they knew and saw from the picture they selected (Talk to the Picture), students also make KWL chart about Natural Disaster/flood to record their learning . Every meeting, mentors checked as well gave feedback about their progress. |

2. Finding Out
-Causes and effect of flooding - What is the role and responsibility of the government in relation to natural disaster. To find out more about the topic, students reads book about Mitigasi Bencana dan Adaptasi Perubahan Iklim, then they make a summary. We also watch Youtube about how government solves the flood problems. We collected information about flood, by interviewing local residents and doing the questionnaire .Resources: http://www.watersafetykids.co.uk/pdfs/Flooding.pdf http://www.bnpb.go.id/pengetahuan-bencana http://www.bnpb.go.id/ http://www.bnpb.go.id/pengetahuan-bencana/sistem-penanggulangan-bencana We had an Excursion to Kementrian Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan, to find out about how they managing and conserving the nation's forest and all the environment relate to it. And the connection between the conserving and protect the natural environment to prevent the natural disaster. second Excursion we went to Balai kota, we meet Mr. Ahoks' assistant and the students had interview, they got further information about the role and responsibility of the government in relation to natural disaster. and how the governor worked together with central government to solve the flood problem. |

3. Sorting out
We had an observation to Krukut river nearby our school, which is always got flooding in every rainy season and the problems are caused by human waste, they dump waste and garbage, to the river. And also Krukut river in Cilandak is become more narrow than before, therefore if its heavy rain the river could not accommodate the water and become flood. we found interesting article on Kompas, Sabtu 28 February 2015, its about local community in Ciganjur: Laskar Krukut, which Mr. Reza Shidqi is the founder of this community, he was really concern about how to reduce flood in Jakarta and how to protect the Krukut to make it clean and gave benefit to the environment. Then we met him and his team on Ciganjur and he explain about how important is to save and keep the Krukut river and put more effort into improving the quality of the rivers to prevent the flood. |

5. Reflecting
What are the best possible solution(s) for floods problem in Jakarta?

6. Taking action
How trees help in preventing floods Trees are one of the most important organisms that exist on planet Earth. Food for all living organisms originates from trees and other members in the plant kingdom. Every single organism depends directly or indirectly on trees for their survival. Trees not only provide food for other organisms, but also shelter and protection to many different types of organisms including humans. There are two major ways in which trees provide protection against flooding. Trees allow water to be drained into the ground Experts say that woodland acts as a barrier to floodwater, while trees also prevent soil erosion, reducing sediment going into rivers and increasing water absorption into the ground. This slows rainwater running off into swollen streams and helps lower peak flood levels. See how a tree aids ground water and prevents run off that can cause flooding Trees help prevent flooding. When plants grow in an area, the roots of plants dig deep in to the soil and create space between soil particles. When it rains in highlands, water that flows downhill gets drained into the space created by the root system of plants. Due to this, chance of flooding is greatly reduced. |
