Tuning In
Exploring, wondering and questioning
This group was focus on Ciliwung river ecosystem. For their topic issues, they want to explore more about fishes and other habitats.
The students start to identify the topic by exploring information through articles, internet, discuss with mentors, formulating questions and observing through pictures. Questions What do I already know and understand? When can I already do? |
Things people may not know about Ciliwung
The Ciliwung River flows 120 kilometers from Bogor in West Java to the ocean. It is one of the biggest rivers flowing through Jakarta. The river is heavily polluted with trash and wastewater from millions of households and industrial plants. Nonetheless, it has some hidden potential. Here are five things about the Ciliwung that people might have missed:
Native animals and plants
It is true that the river is now polluted and pollution has almost pushed some of its native plants and animals into extinction. A native animal like the soft shell turtle called bulus senggawangan is now hard to find. However, the river still has some native fish.
According to the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), fish like suckermouth catfish, guppy fish and tilapia fish can still be found in the river. Visitors can go to cleaner waters upstream to find such fish and if they are lucky, they may meet with a bulus senggawangan.
Besides animals, visitors can also learn about the river’s native plants such as salak (snakefruit), condet and cempedak condet (a family of jackfruit).
Jakarta Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat said on Wednesday during the celebration of Ciliwung Day that if environmental degradation around the river continued, it was possible that these native animals and plants would finally go into extinction.

Causes of river pollution
So what has caused the rivers to become so polluted, and the water so unusable? We have many factors lead to water pollution of this extent, one of the main ones urban/run off. The nitrates and phosphates found in sewage, and in fertilizers, also lead to an over-stimulation in the growth of aquatic plants such as algae. An excess of algae clogs up the waterways, uses up dissolved oxygen as it decomposes, and blocks light to deeper waters. This in turn is very harmful to aquatic organisms such as fish, as it inhibits their respiratory ability. Another factor contributing to water pollution is the large amount of rubbish and waste deposited into the river by inhabitants of the riverside. All of the above are known as municipal pollution, pollution caused by homes and commercial establishments. Add to those factors industrial pollution. Large amounts of industrial waste are deposited into the river system every day, allowing hazardous substances to flow freely in our precious water. Last, but not least, agriculture plays a significant role in polluting rivers. The erosion caused by crops devastates the river systems, and is the leading cause of water pollution |

Ikan Aligator Di Sungai Ciliwung By: Ciliwung Ranger On: Rabu, September 11, 2013 In: alien species, aliens attack, aligator fish, Ciliwung, ikan introduksi, ikan lokal No comments

EXPERIMENTING AND PLAYING WITH POSSIBILITIES
Our experiment was to prove that river ecosystem caused by human interaction to the environment and can affect the balance of systems. We collected sample of river ecosystem such as local fishes, alien fishes, water plant and snail. We provided 2 aquarium and made an experiment by putting one of the aquarium with some detergent and other chemical daily used such as shampoo, soap, etc.
Our prediction is the habitat on the polluted aquarium will die and the clean aquarium will survive?
the result shown that in one week we observed those aquarium and we found that the habitat on the polluted aquarium all died. However some animals in clean water still survive even the rest was died.

MAKING PREDICTIONS AND ACTING PURPOSEFULLY TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS
DEEPENING UNDERSTANDING THROUGH THE APPLICATION OF A CONCEPT
Students, parents, mentors and all the community of Ciliwung river showed the empathy by doing collaboration in cleaning Ciliwung river. We realized that from the small action but we believed it mean a lot to give big effect of Ciliwung river and all the ecosystem around us especially river ecosystem. Start from early morning with high spirit we were cleaning the river by putting all the trash into plastic bags. In five hours we collected around 20 plastic bags of trash. We just surprised if we calculated everyday all the trash here then we assume in one month or one year all the trash might be like a giant mountain. All the ecosystem will destroy and no more clean water.
